How to Make Your Home Cozy on a Budget

There’s nothing better than a cozy night in, but glossy magazines and online articles can often make it feel like it’ll cost a fortune to create a comfy home. Thankfully, though, there are so many ways to build the relaxing, hygge space of your dreams - without breaking the bank.

Here are some tips for how to make your home cozy on a budget.

Embrace the Warmth

Warm colors naturally feel comfortable and inviting; use them to refresh your space and transform it into a cozy oasis. Changing the color of the walls is an inexpensive way to transform the look of a room; consider painting the walls a warmer color, or if you can’t make a permanent change, applying removable wallpaper in a soft print or warm-toned solid color.

Soft light also makes a big difference, but there’s no need to go out and buy a whole bunch of new floor lamps. Simply replace the bulbs in the light fixtures you already have to create a relaxing ambiance in your home that feels warm and welcoming.

Build Layers with Texture

Texture has the power to give your space visual interest and a feeling of lushness, even without spending a lot. Layering a couple of richly-textured blankets over your couch or bed is almost like an invitation to jump in and cuddle up, while a few extra fluffy pillows can offer additional comfy support.

Placing area rugs in high traffic places in your home adds not only a look of warmth, but creates actual warmth over cold, hard floors. Layering rugs has also been a big design trend - an affordable, fluffy throw rug adds an element of cozy texture over wall-to-wall carpeting or an area rug, and can easily be moved or replaced as your style changes!

Mix Old with New

There’s no need to go out and buy all new furniture to make your home feel warm and inviting; in fact, one of our favorite tips for how to make your home cozy on a budget is to mix old pieces with new! A new bed frame could look beautiful next to your lived-in dresser and armoire, while a new area rug could help refresh your current couch.

Something to remember is that an item that’s new to you doesn’t necessarily need to be newly-made. You can try visiting your local thrift store or checking nearby listings online to see if there’s a vintage piece that would look right at home in your space.

Create a Cozy Nook

A cozy corner in your home can create a lovely feeling of welcoming comfort. Think of it as another place you can escape to - for reading, listening to some good music, or enjoying a nice conversation with your loved ones.

A side chair, end table and little lamp can all help transform an empty corner in your living room into a relaxing oasis! Complete the corner with a shelf for books and a bin for your Fuzzy Babbas - how cozy!

Add Your Personal Touch

Personal touches are what turn your house into a home, and there’s nothing cozier than when your space feels like it’s truly your own. From succulents to framed photos, simple accessories can come together and become the perfect finishing touch.

  • Hang a potted plant in a quiet corner to bring freshness to your space with lush greenery.
  • Burn a few candles in a scent that brings back happy memories.
  • Place a vase of your favorite flowers on the dining room table for cheerful, romantic energy.
  • Hang curtains from the windows to add texture and a bit of drama.
  • Line the hallway with a collection of family photos or prints that speak to your heart.
  • Decorate your end tables, shelves and window sills, with meaningful accessories.

When shopping for your decor, be as intentional as you can with your choices. If the item doesn’t make you feel something when you first look at it, or you really can’t imagine it in your space no matter how hard you try, it might not settle into your home as nicely as you hope it will.

Cozy Moments, Happy Life

When trying to make your home cozy on a budget, it’s not always easy to know where to begin - but a few simple swaps and additions are all you really need to turn your space into a hygge home you can fall in love with.
